Launch Camp – Meeting the dinosaurs

This morning, our amazing Launch Camp campers arrived at the beautiful Dolphin House in the sun. We started the day by colouring our passports and chatting to our new friends while we were waiting for everyone to arrive. When all campers were here, we started some team-building games. We played blind t-rex, dinosaur wars and even worked together to tackle the magical prehistoric stick.

Next we had lunch. Today, we had delicious baked potatoes with a huge choice of fillings and some chocolate for dessert.

Then we had our first language lesson in English, French, Spanish or German. We met our teachers and started learning about dinosaur bodies. We flashcard games and learned how to describe the dinosaurs.

Because the weather was so beautiful, we headed to the beach for a little cool-off. We did some swimming and some playing in the sand. We even had a little game of water frisbee.

When we came back, it was time for our second lesson. We learned all about dinosaur actions and modal verbs. We played ‘pin the tail on the dino’, charades and musical actions. Then we used everything we learned to create comic books about our dinosaur characters.

Then it was time for dinner. Tonight was German night and we had Kaspätzle – a German pasta with cheese and onions. Those of us who weren’t so adventurous opted for pasta with a tomato sauce. Then there was German Apfelstrudel for dessert.

Tonight we had our dinosaur egg-streme games. We had lots of funny mini challenges – peeling a banana with our feet, getting a KitKat from our foreheads into our mouths without using our hands and even seeing how many post-it notes we could stick to our faces. It was really funny. The team with the most points won the bag with the most equipment to protect a dinosaur egg. We then had to create a device for the egg to slide down a zipline. The team which had the fastest egg got to break it on the head of a mentor The winning group chose Thomas and he wasn’t very happy!

Now everyone is all tucked up in bed ready for tomorrow. We have another busy day planned!

Heights, Fire, Forest and a Party

This morning, we started the day with some delicious waffles for breakfast. Then it was time to warm-up with Ben. Everyone had great moves, especially Ben!

Then we headed to our morning project groups. The celebrity group created amazing films with an amazing Donald Trump and other super characters! The superhero group invented amazing heroes and villains and featured them in some great comic books. Finally, the Spanish cookery group made delicious ‘alfajores’, south American biscuits with lots of caramel!

After our baked potatoes for lunch, we had some free time outside in the sun! We enjoyed playing lots of sports and relaxing!

This afternoon, we swapped activities from yesterday and one group did the survival activities and the other group did the adventure sports – high ropes, trail biking and archery. Everyone was so brave, going on the high ropes. Ruaraidh and Stuart were extremely good at making their own fire and Katie was amazing at camouflage.

For dinner tonight we had a barbecue, it was very tasty! Later on, we all got dressed up for our party. The girls had impressive make-up skills!

Then it was party time! We danced our hearts out to chart songs and some old classics. We had limbo, played some party games and had our own photo booth. We loved celebrating our last night at camp.

We’ve had an absolute blast this week and are looking forward to seeing our parents and carers again tomorrow. We’ve missed you! À demain! ¡Hasta mañana!

An Adventurous Day

After breakfast this morning, we started the day with a morning dance warm-up with Kara.

Then we headed to our first morning project. Some of us were learning about celebrities in French and making films with Francesca. Some of us were learning about superheroes in French and making comics with Nelly and Benjamin. And some of us were cooking in Spanish with Bronya. We had lots of fun!

After a morning full of new French and Spanish words, we were so happy to eat delicious croque monsieur for lunch.

Then, the group split into two. The adventure sport group got the chance to take part in high ropes, archery and trail biking. The survival group were building shelters in the forest, making their own mini fires using flint and steel, playing a game of hide and seek called camouflage and even cooking ‘stick bread’ on the campfire. It was a busy, active afternoon.

This evening was a Spanish-themed meal and we had nachos and fajitas with watermelon for dessert. ¡Qué rico!

After some free time and showers, this evening’s activity was Master Chef. We first had a taste test with French and Spanish foods. We were blindfolded and we had to guess what we were given. There was Camembert, Manchego cheese, pain au chocolat and even some pâté.

The team with the most points got to choose their ingredients for the invention challenge first. We worked as a team to create two inventive, tasty dishes with the help of our mentors. They helped us with the vocabulary to present our dishes in French or Spanish. Mrs Johnstone and Miss McMann were the judges alongside Thomas.

The finished dishes looked and tasted amazing. The winning team was Nelly’s team!

Everyone is now in bed, getting their energy level up for another busy day tomorrow!

Arriving at Camp

Today we arrived at Lapwing Lodge in the sun! After settling into our rooms and making our beds, we started the day with some team-building activities involving toilet paper, pool noodles and drawing each other’s faces.

Then it was already time for lunch. Today we had baguettes!

Then we had some free time to relax and play outdoors. We played swing ball and football and enjoyed being outdoors.

We then had some more team-building games. We had to get our team through a spider web, stop the water coming through the bamboo tower and ski across land as a team.

We then played games such as capture the flag and dodgeball. Jake and Adrian were very fast and managed to get the flag. The teams both won two games. In dodgeball, we had to protect our kings and queens to win the games.

For dinner, we had French coq au vin or ratatouille with dauphinois potatoes. Lots of us tried something new!

This evening it was our quiz night and egg-streme games. Our teams battled in rounds of questions, getting jaffa cakes from our foreheads into our mouths, peeling bananas with our feet and even sticking post-it notes to our faces!

The winning teams won the most equipment to protect their eggs and make parachutes. After everyone made their parachute, tomorrow we will launch them from the roof and teams who manage to keep their egg safe will get the chance to break them over the heads of the mentors.

Now everyone is tucked up in bed and ready to get some sleep before another action-packed day tomorrow!
